Vatican Will Study Proposal
(NZP-A.-Reuter—Copyright) GENEVA, February 22. The Roman Catholic Church last week accepted a proposal to study possible collaboration between the Protestant and Catholic Churches. The head of the Vatican’s secretariat for Christian unity, Cardinal Augustin Bea, announced acceptance in Geneva. Cardinal Bea was addressing a meeting at the headquarters of the World Council of Churches, which put forward the proposal last month. The world council suggested a joint committee be set up to discuss church unity. Cardinal Bea said: “The Holy See greets with joy and fully accepts the proposal ... to set up a mixed committee, composed of eight representatives of the World
Council of Churches and six of the Catholic Church to explore together the possibilities of dialogue between the World Council of Churches and the Catholic Church.” Cardinal Bea said he was communicating the Vatican's acceptance officially. He said today’s meeting was of “truly historic significance.” The World Council of Churches groups more than 200 Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox and old Catholic Churches in more than 80 countries.
