Borneo Men Parade
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. “Beware of rashness, but with energy and sleepless vigilanc go forward and gain us victory.” These words of Abraham Lincoln to one of his generals were used yesterday by the Chief of the General Staff, Major-General L. W. Thornton, in bidding farewell to the 40-strong Special Air Service group soon to leave for Borneo. The 40 hand-picked men paraded in Papakura camp. After congratulating them on their turn-out, appearance and drill, General Thornton told the men he would issue the commander. Major W. Meldrum, with his directive for the Borneo operation later in the day. “There will be no publicity about your departure from New Zealand, for security reasons,” he said. “But you go, of course, with the good wishes of the whole Army, and with some envy.”
