Record Ride Ry Yaxley

TIMARU, February 21

By clipping I.6sec off the existing national two-mile pursuit record and beating the seasoned Otago rider, C. McNaught, the 21-year-old Christchurch cyclist, B. Yaxley, caused the big upset in the New Zealand cash cycling championships at Timaru yesterday. Yaxley, who is in his first year out of novice class, took a 10-yard lead over McNaught with three laps of the race to go and expanded it to 30 yards at the line.

McNaught, previous holder of the title, was a firm pre-race favourite in spite of Yaxley’s win in the Canterbury title event a fortnight ago. The previous record, held by R. Lucas, was set in 1958.

Yaxley was also a member of the Canterbury team which wrested the three-mile pursuit title from South Canterbury, which had held it for six of the last seven seasons.

I. Coe (South Canterbury), broke from the 17-man field in the 10-mile championship, the main distance event of the day, and at one stage looked likely to lap the field. He led at the start of the bell lap when the Canterbury pair, K. Brown and K. Jeffrey, riding as a team, overhauled him to finish first and second respectively. There were 28 starters in the big cash event of the meeting, the S. F. Hanson Memorial. The experienced Otago rider, N. Barrington, off a handicap of 330 yards, comfortably won from Coe.
