One Dead, 15 Hurt In Four-Car Crash

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, February 21.

A woman died and 15 others were injured, seven of them seriously, in a four-car accident two miles south of Paraparaumu at 12.30 a.m. todav.

The dead woman was

MRS W. MORTON, of Main road, South Paraparaumu.

Five others travelling in the same car as Mrs Morton were seriously hurt. Their names were not available tonight.

The car in which Mrs Morton was travelling was involved in a collision with a vehicle which rolled several times after the impact. The occupants of this vehicle suffered only superficial injuries. Another ear travelling immediately behind the vehicle which rolled, crashed into the car carrying Mrs Morton and all six of its occupants were slightly hurt. They were taken to Lower Hutt Hospital where five were later discharged. Their names were not available tonight. A fourth car crashed into the wreckage of the other vehicles and police called to the scene described it as looking like a battleground. Driver Died

A driver died when two cars collided at Makikihi on the main highway at 10 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Timaru reporter of “The Press.” He was

Robert Augustus Terris, aged 54. married, care of the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru.

His wife, Gladys Amelia Terris, was admitted to the Timaru Hospital with concussion and lacerations. Hetcondition was described today as satisfactory. The other car was driven by Norman Allison Ayers, of 24 Hatton street, Timaru. Mr Ayers suffered concussion and was also taken to hospital. His condition was reported last evening to be satisfactory.

Passengers in Mr Ayers’ car were James Bartholomew Geary, of 56 Grants road. Ewart Ronald Taylor, of 29 Russell square, and William Riley, care of the Commercial Hotel. They were not injured. Dr. T. H. Fisher, of Waimate, attended the accident. Bov Killed

A 16-year-old schoolboy was killed when he was struck by a train on a level crossing near Tuakau on Sunday morning, the Press Association reports. The boy was: William George Walker, also known as George Sylva, son of Mr T. Walker, of 4 Booth crescent, Tuakau.

The boy, who was riding a cycle, stopped at the crossing while a south-bound train passed through. Police believe he rode across the line after the train passed, but before the safety barrier was raised.

He was struck by a train travelling north on an excursion trip before he crossed the tracks. The two trains reached the crossing within seconds of

each other. The crossing is about 200 yards from the Tuakau station.

Struck By Train

A man was killed instantly on Friday night when his car veered off the road, half a mile south of the Waikanae River bridge, and was struck by a southbound goods train. He was

Leopold Byrkowski, aged 46. a plumber, of Te Moana road, Waikanae. Mr Byrkowski was married with four children.

The accident was the third in three years to claim lives on a 100-yard section of straight road south of the Waikanae river bridge. The nearest corner was several hundred yards away. The van driven by Mr Byrkowski is thought to have left the road and slid down a two foot bank into the train’s path. The train crew saw the van crash on to the line a matter of yards in front, and had no possible chance of stopping. The van was completely wrecked before it was thrown clear 50 yards from the point of impact.
