SYDENHAM FALTERS

Aggressive Batting The rather lackadasical attitude of Sydenham in the early minutes of its match against Riccarton cost it dearly by the end of the day. Riccarton. without three of its leading players—R. C. Motz, P. A. Stubbings and R. Thomas—perhaps appeared an easy task for the strong Sydenham side but the Riccarton batsmen, led by G. T. Barrett, applied themselves to the task of scoring runs which they did most successfully. Barrett, assured on defence and with a complete mastery of on-side play, scored his century in 208 minutes and was never troubled by the attack. Although most of his runs came from legside strokes, now and then he played some magnificent straight drives. He was given good support by E. J. Hayes, R. Miller and E. R. Hignett, who all attacked the bowling with relish. B. A. Salt was the best of the Sydenham bowlers. He bowled 37 overs for six wickets for 82 and but for his steadiness Sydenham might have faced an enormous total. Sydenham lost wickets steadily, I. R. Hartland, W. Thomson and K. Thomson being dismissed with only 96 runs on the board. Umpires: Messrs L. C. and H. Johnston.
