SCIENTIST BURNED
Exposed To Radiation (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CHICAGO, Feb. 21. A man is under close observation in the University of Chicago medical centre after being exposed to high radiation. Doctors are watching the case closely because the man suffered the kind of burns millions might receive during an atomic bomb explosion. Robert Carpenter, aged 42, was exposed to a 10-million volt linear accelerator for about four or five seconds on Thursday when he stepped into a room in which the accelerator was located at the Mid-West Irradiation Centre at Rockford. His whole body was exposed to radiation, and his right hand was touched by the electronic beam itself. The hand was severely burned. Carpenter was making an experiment in radiation chemistry when he stepped into the room without realising the machine was still on.
