RACING Hawera Double To Baleno, Grand Win

"The Press” Special Service WANGANUI. The Te Awamutu galloper, Baleno, which has previously raced successfully on the Taranaki circuit, scored his best win to date in the Egmont Gup at Hawera yesterday. He raced prominently throughout and outstayed Sail Away and Fascinate in the final stages.

Grand Win followed tome impressive track trials with victory in the second leg, the six-fur-long Flying Handicap. The off-course substitute, she completed a £26 18s double.

Raced by a Waikato studmaster, Mr J. D. Malcolm, Baleno is trained by L. L. Collett, a loyal supporter of Taranaki meetings. Yesterday’s win was Baleno’s fourth tn the last 15 months and his first in the open grade. Two of his earlier successes included a hack event at Hawera and the Taranaki Hack Cup at New Plymouth. Baleno, ridden by the Takanini lightweight, B. F. Andrews, followed Blue Lodge, Fascinate, and Paralovine on the turn. Andrews kicked Baleno ahead soon after and the combination

crossed the line threequarters of a length clear of the second favourite, Sail Away.

Grand Win scored her first success since taking the Railway Handicap at Trentham last March in the second leg. Claiming a 31b allowance with L. Ward’s services, the shared the pace with Le Plus and Waitaha for most of the race, romping away in the final furlong to beat Donald Dinnie by a length and a half. Donald Dinnie was chopped back at the barrier rise and had only Count Carmel, Brenda Lee and Triple Roll behind him passing the halfmile. He found an opening on the inner approaching the turn, and finished resolutely to beat Le Plus. Results: TE ROTI HIGH-WEIGHT. £300: 10H.—1/1 DARK INTRIGUE (2) 9-2 R. J.
