Interest In N.Z. Camera For Space

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 17. A New Zealand-designed astronomical camera which has many advantages over those already in use may be put into space, in an American satellite.

The camera, designed by Mr N. J. Rumsey, of the physics and engineering laboratory, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, has

attracted the attention of Dr. W. H. Pickering, head of America's unmanned space programme. “Dr. Pickering is very interested in the design, and asked me to keep in touch with him over progress,” said Mr Rumsey, who described the new camera at the Science Congress today.

“So far it has not been built, but we hope to prepare a prototype in the next few months, which will show what it can do,” said Dr. Pickering. Mr Rumsey has already enhanced New Zealand's overseas reputation for optical design. He designed the highly successful all-sky aurora camera already used by several countries, and a new marine beacon. system which is in use in Britain, America and New Zealand. About a dozen of the allsky cameras, which are made by a Wellington firm, have been sold, while orders are coming in from many places for the marine beacon.
