KILLING STOPS

Two S.I. Works

All killing and allied work stopped at the Smithfield works of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd., shortly after lunch yesterday, said the company’s general manager (Mr W. M. Cleland). The stoppage, he said, started with a domestic meeting of the butchers. When the butchers' meeting went on a bit longer than was anticipated, said Mr Cleland, the labourers “got a bit frustrated and went home.” Mr Cleland said he understood the butchers were holding another meeting today for the election of their union officers.

“I expect they will all return to work after their meeting,” he said.

Production ceased at the Alliance Freezing Company’s Lorneville works when seven men on the slaughter board stopped work apparently because of dissatisfaction over working conditions, says the New Zealand Press Association.

Slaughtermen held a meeting at 8.30 a.m. The meeting exceeded the time limit agreed to between the company and the union and fol-low-up workers, made idle by the stoppage, went home. Killing ceased for the day about 9.30 a.m.
