Cycling Canterbury Team Named After Championships

The riders to represent Canterbury in the national cycling championships at Wanganui next month were announced after the completion of the provincial titles at English Park last night.

They are:— Seniors: R. Mann, P. Skilling, W. Kendall, J. Danielson, R. Harrison. Juniors: T. Tabak, J. Cleary, A. Hood, M. Payne, M. Lltolff, G. Sword. Novices: A. Paviell, K. Sword, B. Shaw. In the Anal of the two-mlle individual pursuit for cash riders there was little between B. Yaxley and J. Swanston over the first mile. From then on Yaxley rode much steadier than Swanston and went away to win by 70 yards. There was an exciting finish to the one-mlle cash title event. The pace was slow over the first two laps but entering the bell lap Yaxley made a break on the field and opened up a big gap. Going down the back straight Yaxley had a 25-yard lead over K. Brown, who had F. Hooper on his wheel. Rounding the bottom banking Brown moved very fast and gradually hauled In Yaxley to beat him, while Hooper took second place from Yaxley by half-a-length. R. Mann (Papanul) held the lead in the first round over his club-mate, p. Skilling, in the senior SOO-metre sprints. Skilling made every effort to go round Mann, but just failed by half a length. In the second round both riders were on even terms at the 220-yard mark, but a few yards further on Skilling seemed to receive some check and Mann rode away for a comfortable win.

T. Tabak (Avon) seemed content to take the back running in the junior sprint against M. Lltolff (Avon), Tabak was still at the back at the 220-yard mark and failed to get up by half a length. In the second round Tabak took the front and made the pace to hold off Lltolff and win by half a length. Tabak in the third and final round used the same tactics and hold the lead Into the straight, but then seemed to ease up and Lltolff went past to win by a wheel.
