Young Company Michelle Morris will soon be Britain’s youngest limited company—at the age of five. The daughter of a company director, she is one of Yorkshire’s busiest models, so busy that her mother, Mrs Mavis Morris, has to turn down bookings. Mr and Mrs Morris want to ensure Michelle’s future by registering her as a limited company. They will be directors—but there will be no payment of dividend until Michelle is 21. —London, February 17. Storm In Antarctic A severe storm yesterday cut off communications between Scott Base and McMurdo Station and sent the icebreaker Eastwind steaming to sea for safety. The wind and blizzard conditions made it impossible for navy and scientific staff to make the vehicle journey from McMurdo Station to Scott Base to take pre-arranged telephone calls there from New Zealand last evening at the routine tune. Long Walk Off Mr A. M. Waitere, of Christchurch, who was next month to have attempted to beat his own 100-mile walking record, this time in Australia, has called it off because of a dislocated back muscle. In May last year he set the present 100-mile walking record by plodding from Christchurch to Timaru in 30 hours 20 minutes wearing 61b boots and carrying a 301 b pack on his back. Price Increases The workers of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company of N.Z., Ltd., yesterday afternoon were addressed at the company’s Papanui factory by the national councillor for Canterbury on the Federation of Labour (Mr L. Short) and the secretary of the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union (Mr T. Fletcher). Both men spoke about the Government’s alleged failure to take positive steps to combat rising prices. Their speeches were part of the policy of the F.O.L. to address meetings of workers on the subject of price increases. No Climbers The Mount Cook national park is clear of climbers. The chief ranger (Mr M. L. Burke) said last evening that the last three climbers in the area came out yesterday. They had been up the Tasman Valley, but had attempted no major climbs. It was the first time the been clear since early December, said Mr Burke. There was no appreciable difference in the number of climbers this season compared with the previous year. If anything, there had been fewer, on account of adverse weather.—(F.O.O.R.) Marlin Dinner The first guest at the new Waitangi tourist hotel to catch a big-game fish, Mr N. W. Millner, of Christchurch, presented his catch, a 2311 b striped marlin, to the hotel, and was given a champagne dinner to mark the event. Mr Millner caught his marlin from the launch Leilani, skippered by Mr J. Whitelaw. Warm Day Christchurch had temperatures in the 80’s yesterday afternoon, and generally the weather was pleasant with a light north-westerly wind. A maximum temperature of 83 degrees was recorded at the Weather Office at Christchurch Airport at 3.45 p.m., while half an hour later the temperature indicator on the Government Life building in Cathedral square registered 85 degrees. At 3 p.m. in the Botanic Gardens it was 81 degrees. The low morning cloud cleared by mid-morn-ing, and temperatures rose steadily from 59 degrees at 9 a.m. to 80 degrees by 2 p.m. Baby Submarines Midget multi-purpose commercial submarines will be built in Japan soon for home and overseas markets. Twenty-six-year-old Josiane Laures is still going strong after two months in a 330 ft deep cave in an experiment to test the effects of complete isolation, Mr Michel Siffre, leader of the experiment, reports. She will emerge from the cave, in the foothills of the Alps, in a month’s time. Mr Siffre says Miss Laures is passing the time reading novels and painting.—Nice, February 17.
