A POST OFFICE IN THE ANTARCTIC.—Mr M. Gray, postmaster at Scott Base, selling stamps to Mr G. Carr, a carpenter (back to camera), and Mr D. Lowe, a field assistant (right). Although the Ross Dependency extends from the Antarctic Circle in a wedge shape to the South Pole, Mr Gray finds business brisk enough without moving from Scott Base. He estimates that the sale of stamps this summer will amount to about £3500. The five-month season ends soon. Philatelists from many countries write for Ross Dependency stamps cancelled with the Scott Base date stamp, and some are collecting souvenir envelopes autographed by members of New Zealand Antarctic research field parties.
