HOW THEY LEFT

(Neto Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, February 4.

A few minutes before 2.30 p.m. one of the prisoners overpowered a warder in the maximum security basement section of the Auckland prison.

Threatened by a sawn-off shotgun held by the prisoner the warder unlocked the other two prisoners.

They overpowered two more warders on duty in the section and locked all three in a cell. Then the prisoners took Second Officer D. E. Cavanagh and marched him at gunpoint through the prison for 150 yards to the back gate.

They ordered the gatekeeper to open the gate, which opens on to the prison quarry. Standing outside the gate was a truck used in the quarry.

They ordered the driver out of the way and climbed in.

They drove off with Mr Cavanagh and smashed through a security boom. A tower sentry fired a shotgun burst at the truck as they fled.
