Cleared Of Treason
(N.Z.PA.-Reuter—Copyright) KARLSRUHE. Feb. 3 Dr. Josef Augstein, brother of the publisher of the West German news magazine “Spiegel,” and a businessman, Mr Paul Conrad, were cleared yesterday of treason charges over the “Spiegel affair.” Cases are still pending against the magazine’s publisher, Mr Rudolf Augstein, the deputy-editor, Mr Conrad Ahlers, and an army colonel, Alfred Martin. They are charged with treason for revealing military secrets in two articles criticising West German defence. The articles led to a Government crisis, culminating in the resignation of the Defence Minister, Mr F. J. Strauss, after criticism of his direction of a police raid on the "Spiegel’s” office.
