Hydro Village Talks End Well
(New Zealand Press Association)
ROTORUA, February 4. Discussions on the Turangi hydro village between the Minister of Works (Mr Alien) and members of the Taupo County Council ended on a note of harmony at Tokaanu this morning.
Earlier the council had protested at the standard of some bouses planned for what will become a permanent town. Mr Allen said later that alleged breaches of by-laws had been gone into today and that some minor adjustments to plans would be made. Any houses that did not comply with county by-laws would not be used. "I think everyone was happy and my department will look forward to the co-operation of the council,” he said. Future plans will be submit-
ted to the council for approval.
The director of the Ministry of Works Housing Division, Mr J. V. Jebson, said 100 houses would be ready for occupation on April 1. Rents would be as agreed between the department and the New Zealand Workers' Union.
The floor space of most of the houses would vary between 670 and 1050 sq. ft and cost between £3200 and £4OOO. Others provided for large families would have four and five bedrooms.
