Back To School And Cut Lunches

This week meant back to school for children and back to the cut lunch routine—and the problem of what to put between the bread—for mother.

Sandwich fillings are easy to find just now with lettuce and tomatoes to fall back on, and plenty of fresh fruit. Bottling is going along steadily and everything needed, such as jars, vinegar, sugar and spices, is. readily available. Hair Shampoo.—Hair shampoos are big business in New Zealand with many dozens of varieties available. Some brands are backed by heavy advertising campaigns. A new brand, Alberto VOS, expected in; New Zealand in March, is one of the largest selling shampoos in the United States. In 1956 its sales were Um and next year, by reinvesting all profits into advertising, sales may reach 100 m. Two sizes, 7oz at 8s and 3oz at 4s 6d, will be available in two formulas, dry hair and regular. Salmon.—Canadian packers are still quoting the popular packs and grades of salmon such as Sockeye and pink and there does not appear to be any shortage. Bank rates and other changes have raised prices slightly. Japanese pink salmon is still being offered in quarters and halves even though it was thought that stocks would run out. However, many New Zealand Importers, with no licences left, cannot buy. Ceylon Tea Prices.—Nearly all teas rose id to 3d in this week’s tea sales in Colombo but if prices stay high it will be some time before it affects New Zealand packet tea. Whether these prices will remain high is not known. With so much political unrest In Ceylon, anything could happen. Black Currant Syrup.—H. F. Stevens, Ltd. has a new improved preparation of black currant vitamin syrup. It is available in a 13 ounce family size bottle and will retail at 7s 6d.

Cigarettes.—Messrs W. D. and H. O. Wills New Zealand are permitted to manufacture in New Zealand Benson and Hedges special filter 20’s. Benson and Hedges are renowned for their high quality cigarettes but these have only been available on im-

port licence. Stocks have already been released in the North Island and in Christchurch since the beginning of February. The 20's will retail at 2s 9d.

Pineapple.—New season’s prices for Australian pineapple appear to be unaltered and usual cuts and sizes are readily available. Pineapple is also being quoted from Swaziland and Malaysia. Malaysia had difficulty in shipping pineapple to New Zealand but two ships with Malaysian pineapple are arriving later this month. Before World War II Malaya supplied most of the New Zealand market but quality problems and political unrest has prevented large supplies from being sent.
