FARMING AIMS
Appeal For Action (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Feb. 4. An appeal for action to ensure that the aims of the Agriculture Development Conference were carried out was made today by Mr J. P. McFaull, economist to the Meat and Wool Board’s Economic Service. Speaking to the annual conference of the New Zealand Association of Economists, Mr McFaull said the conference appeared to have lost momentum. The Government had given effect to some recommendations and had said it would give sympathetic consideration to the others. Business leaders now understood the purpose of fixing targets, farmers supported the aims of the conference, and useful contacts had resulted from it. But this was not enough, he said. There was resentment that so little had been done since the conference. Mr McFaull asked whether regional targets, which would certainly provoke opposition, ought to be worked out and announced.
“This would certainly put the finger on laggard districts,” he said. In discussion, Professor B. P. Philpott, of Lincoln College, suggested Federated Farmers could follow up district targets.
