Students At Clinics
Sir, —The cold reason (and no regrets) in the reply by the director of the Mental Health Division of the Department of Health to "Once Bitten, Never Again,” is deplorable. When, as a psychologist, I attended lectures and demonstrations with medical students at Sunnyside, I am happy to say that respect for the person and dignity of the patient was stressed repeatedly, and extreme care was exercised in choosing cases to act as “guinea pigs.” The onus should not be on a disturbed person to object specifically to the presence of students at an examination, particularly before diagnosis is complete. We should have the assurance of the Minister of Health that all patients at the hospitals and clinics under his control will always be accorded kindness and consideration as a “standard practice.”—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. February 4, 1965.
