FIRE RISK LOW
Rain In Most Forest Areas (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Jan. 19. There was no fire risk in any of New Zealand’s forests at present, the chief fire control officer for the Forest Service (Mr A. Taylor) said today. “We have had a most extraordinary year so far. Generally we have had rain everywhere we wanted it,” he said. There was a slight fire risk at Balmoral forest which could be exaggerated if good weather continued. “We are now 80 per cent down on the seasonal number of fires. It’s nothing short of phenomenal,” he said. “It is obvious the public are taking care in the forests and are not lighting fires which could get out of hand. “But we cannot afford to be complacent. Even with the good deal of rain we have had, there is a lot of dry stuff around and a little carelessness could start a big blaze.”
