ALL BLACK SELECTOR

Mr McPhail Nominated

Mr N. J. McPhail, chairman of the All Black selection panel since 1961, was nominated for the position of chairman of the selection panel to choose the All Black teams to play South Africa this year at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. As the chairman of the national panel will be ch**en by the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union as an independent member, and the other two members automati-

cally will be the chairman of the North and South Island panels, Mr McPhail also was nominated as a South Island selector in case he missed out as chairman. Mr J. Storey suggested that another nomination from Canterbury for the position of South Island selector as well as Mr McPhail. “If Mr McPhail is appointed as national chairman, then Canterbury will not be represented on the South Island panel at all.” The chairman (Mr J. O. Hattersley) said that he did not approve two men from the same province being put up for the position of island selector. “We think we are nominating the right man for the chairman of the national panel, and if he misses out on that job then he is the right man for the South Island panel. I don’t think we should press for an alternative,” he said. “If Canterbury does not have a representative on the South Island panel, I do not think that is of great importance. The men who are chosen will do their best,” said Mr Hattersley.
