Snow Takes Heavy Toll

(N.Z. PA. -Reuter—Copyright) MONTE CARLO, January 19. Monte Carlo Rally headquarters reported today severe road conditions during the night had taken a heavy toll of competitors. Not more than 50 of the 238 starters, and possibly only half that number, might reach the finish. The field had been cut to 158 at the check point in Chambery, France. But snow fell heavily as crews began the 510-mile route through the .mountains to Monte Carlo. Drivers who had abandoned, reported about a foot of snow on the roads. The Finnish driver, Timo Makinen, in a B.M.C. Cooper "S”, was said to be going well, and was named as a possible winner. The top performers will have another gruelling mountain test tomorrow night
