A Maori’s Example
Robert Mahuta, says the officer for Maori education in Auckland, is a real example to the Maori people. So he is; and to others as well. His night-school studies to gain a comfortable School Certificate pass 10 years after leaving school, an interval spent in the Huntly mines and in Army service, suggest he deserves the chance of realising his ambition to become a schoolteacher. If he can fire his pupils with his own enthusiasm he will be able to do more for them than many teachers who follow more orthodox and less challenging paths to training college. His achievement and maturity warrant a waiver of the Endorsed School Certificate qualification; but, even if the rules cannot be evaded in that way, Mr Mahuta does not sound the man to be discouraged. He will surely have his classroom.
