How Many Chinas?

Sir, —The .leading article, “How Many Chinas,” was timely and thorough; it deserves thoughtful re-reading, many times. But there is only one China now, and it will never be acceptable to Peking for there to be more than one China in the future. Certainly not in the United Nations Assembly. The idea that the People’s Republic of China would lay waste Taiwan is pure phantasy. The Government of New Zealand would have us think that it refrains from recognising Peking out of consideration for the Chinese on Taiwan. That too is pure phantasy. I hope your editorial will send readers to seek the full history of China and the United Nations, and of its predecessor, the League of Nations. The Peking Government is the Government of China. A permanent seat on the Security Council and Assembly is China’s by right. The United States of America put Taipeh in that seat because Taipeh is a protegee or puppet of Washington.—Yours, etc., A.
