WELLINGTON, Jan. 6. The police did not approve of private citizens defending their properties with firearms, the Commissioner of Police (Mr C. L. Spencer) said tonight. Apart from legal restrictions on the use of arms, the country would get into a bad state if people were allowed to carry firearms for denot to have an armed police force as did some other countries. Mr Spencer added. fending their properties, said Mr Spencer.
The police themselves carried firearms only when they knew they would have to deal with somebody who was armed, he said. If arms were freely carried for property protection, criminals would also carry them. A situation would then be created in which shooting matches would occur and lives would be lost. New Zealand was fortunate not to have arms freely available to the public and fortunate, too,
