Academic Berg, arrived at Wellington today for a five-day stay. Two months out from her home port of Nicolyev, on the Black Sea, the Academic Berg will refuel and provision before sailing south to the Campbell Island area. Commanded by Captain Alexey Stepanov, the ship has another five months at sea before it returns home from a round-the-world voyage. The duties of the women aboard are varied. Some are deck-hands and cooks, but there are also a laboratory assistant, a laundress, and a stewardess. The year-old ship trawls at depths between 125 and 2000 feet. Scientists aboard are collecting samples of fish and fish oil. These and data on depths and temperatures of the sea are being gathered on behalf of the Vladivostok Institute of Fisheries, Russia’s main fisheries school.
