Wanted His Share
NELSON, Jan. 6. Four men in a dinghy attempted to beat off an Bft shark with their oars when it “poked its ugly snout over the gunwale” off Tukurua, Golden Bay, yesterday. Mr R. €. Galey and three friends were fishing 10 miles from Takaka. The fishing was good and snapper were coming aboard regularly. Then, as one more snapper was brought aboard, the shark lifted its head over the side of the 10ft 6in dinghy. “He was very cheeky

and appeared to be completely unafraid of either us or our boat,” said Mr K. F. King, of Tukurua, ore of the four anglers. “His head was grey and he lifted it at least 12 inches out of water.” Mr King described how he and his friends beat at the shark with their oars, but this appeared to have no effect. Then the shark began to snatch the fish from their hooks and they decided to call it a day. “We had caught a large number of fish and the blood must have attracted the thing,” said Mr King.
