CENTURY IN BRABIN CUP GAME

An aggressive and attractive century by Canterbury’s P. A. Stubbings 'against Auckland highlighted the first day’s play in the final series of matches in the Brabin Cup cricket tournament being held in Dunedin.

Stubbings was at the wic-i kets just under three hours! and hit two sjxes and 19 foursl in his 122. He drove, hooked

and cut with great power and although one or two of his drives were uppish, they were hit so hard that the fieldsmen had little chance of a catch.

Canterbury went on to make 243 in under four hours and before the close of play bad taken three Auckland wickets for 67.

In the match between Wellington and Otago, both with one competition point, the home team batted throughout the day except for two periods when play was rained off for a total 105 minutes, and were 196 for six at the close of play.

I The feature of Otago’s innings was the patient knock by

R. N. Stewart, who was 71 not out when play ended after coming to the wicket when his side was one down for 50. .

Canterbury began shakily against Auckland, the medi-um-pace bowler C. Wilson taking two cheap wickets while the total was going through to 23. Stubbings and C. Broad held out for a time, but when Broad was dismissed Canterbury was three for 68. By lunch. Auckland had no further success and the score was 117.

After lunch Stubbing? was in command while G. E. Vivian and J. R. Carson, both bowling unchanged from lunch until the end of Canterbury’s innings, bad all the

other batsmen in difficulties. Auckland too. began shakily, losing two wickets cheaply and then that of the hard hitting W. J. Mitchell in the last 15 minutes before stumps. Canterbury’s pace bowlers, K, Nicholson and R. Merrin, both had the batsmen defending hard at times. Scores:—
