Burge Leads Recovery

SYDNEY, January 4.
The Australian test batsman, P. Burge, scored a grand 157 not out (18 fours in 283 minutes) in a splendid innings by Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales today. Queensland not only wiped off its first innings deficit of 212, but with five down for 393 at stumps, was 181 runs ahead with one day left to playBurge’s century, his first of the season, was marked by powerful driving, cutting and hooking. Burge figured in two century partnerships, 110 in 99 minutes for the third wicket with S. Trimble and 130 in
117 minutes for the fourth wicket with T. Veivers.
Trimble did not play one of his best innings, but his 85 (six fours) in 203 minutes helped lay the foundation for the Queensland recovery. Veivers dominated the stand with Burge in scoring 77 in 117 minutes. He hit a six off Simpson and eight fours. Scores were:—
New South Wales 360, versus Queensland 148 and five for 393 (P. Burge 157 not out, S. Trimble 85, T. Veivers 77, D. Bull 40; D. Renneberg 2/82).
