SPIN UPSETS SPRINGBOKS

(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright)

JOHANNESBURG, December 29.

Defeat faced South Africa at the end of the fourth day of the second cricket test against England at Johannesburg yesterday.

It will start the final day still needing o 8 runs to avoid an innings defeat—the same fate which befell the team in the first test.

South Africa failed by 15 runs to save the follow on when it was all out for 317 m reply to England’s first innings total of 531.

There was still a reasonable chance of the Springboks salvaging a draw when they

batted again, but the offspinner, D. A. Allen, virtually wrecked their hopes. In a devastating spell of 20 overs, nine of them maidens, he took the wickets of E. J. Barlow, A. J. Pithey and T. L. Goddard, who made a gallant 50. At the close. South Africa was 146 for four. Grip Of Steel Allen and the other offspinner, F. J. Titmus, clamped a grip of steel on the home batsmen and only Goddard and later R. G. Pollock were able to counter them with any degree of confidence. The 21-year-old Pollock at last got the better of Titmus, who had taken his wicket four times in five innings. His undefeated 37 included a six and five fours off the Middlesex bowler.

Two other sixes, both off Alien, were hit by R. McLean and K. C. Bland —gestures of defiance which lightened the gloom of the Springbok batting.
