Only Pairaudeau Match For Superior Auckland

(New Zealand Press Association)

HAMILTON, December 29.

Auckland asserted its superiority over Northern Districts in no uncertain terms, winning by an innings and 43 runs in the Plunket Shield cricket match which ended at Hamilton today.

Auckland won with more than two hours to spare and the result was a fair reward for its better cricket. In batting, bowling and fielding Auckland was clearly the superior side.

Once B. H. Pairaudeau, the Northern Districts captain, had been dismissed for 93, there was not a great deal of substance in the second innings, which ended at 198. Pairaudeau Superb

That was an improvement of 51 on the 147 with which Northern Districts had replied to Auckland’s 388 for seven declared.

Pairaudeau was in superb form, which if maintained must make him a strong contender for New Zealand selection this season. He stayed for 213 minutes, during which he hit eight fours, as well as a glorious six over long-off at the expense of the leftarm spinner, H. J. Howarth. Northern Districts’ discomfort against stalwart pace bowling by R. S. Cunis and well-controlled spin by J. T. Sparling and Howarth was made worse by outstanding fielding. Some of the catching was magnificent W. P. Bradburn, B. Dunning, Pairaudeau, B. Sutcliffe, and E. C. Petrie all went to outstanding catches

which must have gladdened the hearts of the bowlers. At no stage was there any life in the pitch. However, the tendency of the ball to keep low had the batsmen on guard and restricted scoring on the final day. AUCKLAND First Innings 388 for seven dec.
