Christmas Eve Retirements
Five members of the Post Office engineering branch retired on Christmas Eve with a total of, more than 170 years’ service. Mr A. C. Crysell, the senior lines overseer, joined the Post Office at Wanganui as a telegram delivery boy in 1923. He transferred to the lines and construction branch in 1926, with which he remained. Most of his service was in the Waikato area, and he was given his present appointment in November, 1963. Mx Crysell plans to spend his retirement in Wanganui.
Mr R. H. Clarke, lines overseer, began as a telegram delivery boy and junior mechanic. He poined the lines and construction branch in 1929 and was transferred to Rangiora in 1938. Mr Clarke was there until his promotion to Christchurch last August. He will continue to live at Rangiora. Mr H. A. Hancock, a mechanician, began with the Post Office as a telegram delivery boy in Wellington in 1924. He transferred to the technicians’ branch in the same year, and came to Christchurch in 1952. He will spend his retirement here.
Mr L. F. Jones, leading body-builder in the workshops, joined the department in 1950. He was foreman in the buildings maintenance section for a time, but returned to the workshops in 1952.
Mr C. B. Simmonds, senior painter in the workshops, began as a telegram deliveryboy in Wellington in 1923. He has spent more than 40 years in the painting and panel-beating section of the workshops. All five were bidden farewell at staff functions during the week before Christmas.
