Hard Travelling Was Worthwhile
The Winton owner, Mr M. Deegan, had a memorable winning day yesterday to compensate for some hard travelling between Otago and Southland.
Mr Deegan bred and owns Capers, which made a successful race debut at long odds in the Novice Stakes, the second race at Wingatui. Mr Deegan supported the filly on the totalisator, and she paid £56 4s 6d to win and £lB 10s for a place. Minutes after Capers scored her narrow win Mr Deegan was on the 130-mile road home for the trots at Winton. He was on the Winton racecourse well before the pro-
gramme finished, and had a winning day there as well. A syndicate to which Mr Deegan belongs invested £2O to win on Tryout, which paid £7 0s 6d to win.
Capers’ win at Wingatui was a meritorious one. She was the least-fancied of three runners from A. E. Didham’s stable, and she was ridden by C. Clydesdale, who does not get much riding, and had resumed only recently after breaking a leg. In the corresponding race last year, Flying York, another Winton-owned galloper, also made a winning debut from the same stable and paid £92 10s to win.
Flying York won in the colours of Mr D. D. Fea, partowner of Bon Filou.
