AUSTRALIAN ROAD TOLL
“Slaughter” Seen (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, Dec. 28. At least 46 persons have been killed on Australian roads since the Christmas holiday period began. New South Wales, with 22 deaths from midnight on Christmas Eve, accounted for nearly half the total. The New South Wales toll for the year stood at 1000 deaths last night. In Victoria, 11 holiday deaths brought the year’s road toll to 906. Up to midnight, five road deaths had been reported for the holiday period in South Australia, four in Tasmania and two each in Queensland and Western Australia. Road safety officials described the nation-wide toll as a slaughter. Drownings too, have taken their toll this Christmas. Eight drownings ha been reported in New South Wales alone. Most occurred in rivers and creeks. In Victoria, four persons have drowned. Two died in one accident when a small boat overturned 50 yards off the coast near Stawell. A third man swam ashore.
