5½-MILE SWIM

(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Dec. 28. A 15-year-old schoolgirl, Cheryl Gane, of Gisborne, who had never swum more than a mile in the sea previously because salt affects her eyes, today became the first woman to complete the five and a-half-mile swim from Young Nick's Head to Waikanae Beach. Her official time was 3hr 34min. To the cheers of a large crowd, she ran the final 50 yards along the beach between the winning post flags to her mother, who was standing in the shallows. There were only two entrants and both set records. The race was won by a Wafkanae Surf Life-saving Club member, Robert Kerr, aged 17, in 3hr 13min, which beat the record set by lan Watt last’ year by 14 minutes.
