The Mayor Overspent

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright)

LONDON, December 28. A Mayor has been asked to resign after spending a year’s expense allowance of £llOO in seven months. Cr. Peter Hepburn was expelled by the Labour group who control the Jarrow-on-Tyne, County Durham, town council, but he said last night: “I told the group I saw no reason to resign.’’ “I have nothing to be ashamed of. I spent the

money to put Jarrow back on the industrial map.” Cr. Hepburn, a £l2-a-week joiner, said that entertainment had cost a lot of money but he had not asked for an extra allowance like other Mayors did when their expense money ran out. “We cannot deprive the Mayor I of his seat on the council, j but he will have to pay! himself for official entertaining during the rest of I his year in office,” said' one of the group. 1
