SCOTT BASE. Dec. 28. Most of the staff at j Scott Base are at the academic peak of their careers. In this summer season’s! New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme field par ties there are seven scientists with doctorates, one professor. four from overseas studying on scholarships at New Zealand universities, and science degrees are held by many others. Field parties from Victoria University of Wellington, the! University of Canterbury, and Lincoln College help to boost the number with degrees. j Scientific and Industrial R<- ; search. I One of the scholarship students is a United States Fui- | bright Scholar, two are from j United Kingdom universities, iand one from Australia. ■! Since Scott Base is a selfcontained unit in its day-to- ■ day work, all of the permanent staff chosen for the year are fully qualified in thi.r particular jobs. From about 300 applicant 14 have been chosen to winter over and eight for the summer support staff. Field parties, distinguished i visitors and specialist scientists add a floating population •lof about 60 to the base during ' this summer season.
