ALLERGIC TO WATER
Three Cases Of Hives (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania. Ordinary water, “the most trusted compound in the universe,” can provoke a painful outbreak of hives in some people, according to two American skin specialists. Dr. Walter B. Shelly and Dr. Howard M. Rawnsley, both of the University of Pennsylvania, said they came to the conclusion from observing three cases of an unexplained form of hives in which, they decided, “the common denominator is surface contact with sweat or even pure water.” In short, the victims are allergic to water.
Reporting in the “Journal of the American Medical Association,” Dr. Shelley and Dr. Rawnsley noted ironically that water, “the very essence of life, is considered safe above all else. “We bathe in it, we drink it, we live by it, asking of it only purity,” they said. “Hence it is with difficulty than one comes to realise that some individuals react adversely to simple contact with water.”
