£24,000 POST

Beeching To Give Up (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 25. Dr. Richard Beeching, a top business executive seconded from industry to modernise Britain’s near-bankrupt Stateowned railways, is to give up his post in the middle of next year. The Minister of Transport, Mr Tom Fraser, told Parliament that Dr. Beeching—appointed by the former Conernment at a record civii service salary of £24,000 a year—would go back to the giant Imperial Chemical Industries. British Railways were losing about £150,000,000 when Dr. Beeching took over in 1961. The deficit was down to £134,000,000. His drastic cut in existing service and proposals for further closing of uneconomic lines up and down the country provoked a major controversy. His final recommendations published in March, 1963, proposed to withdraw passenger services from 5000 route miles out of a total of 17,800 and to close 2363 out of 4709 passenger stations.
