Shows No Sign Of Early Set-Back

Summer Magic was much too strong for his rivals at the end of six furlongs in the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Champagne Stakes at Wingatui on Saturday.

J. R. Dowling had to change hands with his whip to keep the handsome Gore colt straight going to the furlong but there was no doubting the favourite’s mastery of the situation in the last half furlong. He won going away by a length and a half. This was Summer Magic’s third win for his Gore owners, Messrs S. G. Farry and E. A. Winsloe. His second was in the Welcome Stakes at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November. In physique he has also made wonderful improvement since

l Summer Magic’s dam, Taj, died when he was three weeks old, and the Summertime colt

was hand fed by Mr and Mrs W. L. Aynsiey at their Eastern Southland stud until he first joined the Winsloe stable. Quick Flight, the least-fancied of the Riccarton runners for a win, was unlucky to miss second to Summer Magic.

He got to within half a length of Summer Magic with a likelylooking run outside the furlong, but spoilt his chance by shifting ground towards the inside. Polar beat him by inches for second. Te Mania, the most solidly-backed Riccarton representative, weakened to ninth after a speed duel with Natter in front to the straight. Natter faded to sixth. CANTERBURY SPORTSMEN, lovely easy drive through Lewis Pass to Reefton on Wednesday. —Advt.
