TROTTING Bonnieburn Returns To Form At Ashburton

Bonnieburn, at odds of almost 48 to 1, caused a major surprise when he beat the stablemates Marquess and Pancho Boy in the Ashburton Cup on Saturday. Bonnieburn came with a determined stayer’s run to be just behind the leaders at the furlong. He took a short lead soon after and finished on gamely to win by half a length.

Bonnieburn raced disappointingly at the cup meeting last month and he failed to impress in his previous start at Addington Raceway 7 on December 5. However, his owner-trainer, S. M. Miller, of Methven, was not completely surprised by the win.

“He worked better than he had for some time on Thursday morning. He didn’t go very fast, but he felt good,” said Miller after the race.

The Ashburton Cup was Miller’s most important training and driving success. Miller trains on the property formerly owned by Mr G. McKendry, who raced Bonnieburn’s sire, Gay Piper, with success some years ago.

The firm favourite, Lochgair, finished a splendid fifth, less than two lengths from Bonnieburn. He met with a serious check and broke after about three furlongs and must have lost the best part of 50 yards. He put in a big run from the five furlongs and fought on in grand style. Lady Charles and Spring Garrison, the two best backed after Lochgair were never dangerous. Spring Garrison meeting trouble early and being pushed towards the tail of the field.

Safe Return, Glenurquhart. Massacre and Terrace Dale were other slow beginners. Marquess was first out, but after three furlongs Anarca Direct took over. At this point Lochgair and Stormont met trouble. Terrace Dale joined Anarca Direct at the 11 furlongs, where Bonnieburn was seventh in a close-running field. Fox Able rushed up to second near the six furlongs, with Bonnieburn not far away in ninth position at the half-mile. Bonnieburn was close behind Marquess, Anarca Direct, Glenurquhart, Pancho Boy and Soanfra at the furlong, with Lochgair also prominent. Bonnieburn was soon in control and he fought on boldly to win by half a length from Marquess, Pancho Boy, held third a length back, with heads to Soanfra and Lochgair. Safe Return, which covered extra ground, was next, clear of Lady Charles and Anarca Direct, with a longer gap to Glenurquhart. £668 Double Queen's Cord made a successful first appearance from R. Young’s Addington team and brought herself into favour for the £3OOO Canterbury Parle Trotting Cup next Saturday night when she won the Winslow Handicap. This was the second leg of the double, the first having been won by Bonnieburn. The return for £1 was £668 10s 6d. Uteena made all of the pace

from Mighty Chief, with Queen's Cord third and Asia Minor handy. Flaming Way was checked and broke when Oakleigh Lad came back quickly near the half-mile.

Mightv Chief attempted to go Inside the tiring Uteena outside the furlong, but there was insufficient room and he broke. Queen’s Cord had a short lead at the furlong, with Asia Minor, Uteena, Our Own and Robert Medoro showing up. Queen’s Cord was too good over the final stages and she won by two lengths and a half from Asia Minor. Our Own was only a neck away third, • splendid effort from 24 yards. Dreaming came home well lor a close fourth, half a length in front of Harbour Light. Astralight. Robert Medoro and Flaming Way were next, clear of Uteena.
