TALL TALES OF WAILS
“The Press” Special Service WAITANGI, Dec. 27 Eerie wailing noises have been puzzling guests in the lounge of the new Waitangi Hotel. Taking advantage of the situation, lounge stewards are usually ready with a variety of explanations. Overseas visitor: What on earth is that noise? First steward: Seagulls, sir. They roost on the roof. Visitor (five minutes later): Look, what is that noise? Second steward: Maori ghosts, sir. They depart from the roof. There is, a simpler explanation—wind in the louvres.
