Sixteen infants—including one 45 minutes old—were passed hand to hand down a human ladder to safety today when fire swept the top floor of a maternity home in suburban Finchley. All the children and their mothers escaped uninjured from the maternity section of the West Middlesex Hospital. ■ "The staff acted with | great promptness. None of 'the babies or their mothers was affected by the fire,” said 'the hospital secretary, Mr Christopher Evans.
The fire apparently began in a television set.
