STAMP STORY
Italian Somaliland, to form the new republic of Somalia. The design of the stamp illustrated shows the tomb of Sheikh Isaaq, lying in an arid part of the country between the mountains and the sea near the village of Mait. The Somalis make many pilgrimages to this lonely spot, for the memory of the sheikh is still greatly revered. According to legend, the sheikh was an Arab who landed at Mait from Southern Arabia some time between 900 and 500 years ago, and, after making alliances with the local chieftains, acquired a leading position in the land of his adoption. He is regarded as the founder of four of the leading tribes of cenitral Somaliland.
