Fewer Mines; More Coal
Rationalisation of West Germany’s coal-mining industry has closed 37 major pits since 1957 but annual production has not fallen.
The pits closed had an annual output of 17,500,000 tons and employed 66,983 men who have been transferred to other mines or been absorbed in other industries in labour-hungry Germany. The total labour force in the pits has dropped from 503,000 in 1959 to 371,000 in 1963, but increasing automation has produced greater efficiency as the mines fight off the challenge of the booming oil industry.
