GOSFORTH STREET, off Jack’s Lane, Leeds, a painting by William Papas that is typical of the unusual fare in “Miscellany One,” edited by Edward Blishen and published by the Oxford University Press. The Miscellany is for older children and includes some pages of striking art by such prominent painters as Papas, Brian Wildsmith, Jean Canter, Charles Keeping and Annette Macarthur Onslow. Short stories by well-known writers range from a tale of Roman Britain by Rosemary Sutcliff to a story of the “Mersey Look” by Eric Allen. Articles include a piece on Benjamin Britten, an account of personal experiences at a stage school, instruction on ski-ing, and explanations of the names of places. The articles and stories are illustrated by well-known illustrators of children’s books, and some attractive verse is scattered through the book.
