Omakau Helping Young Widow
(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 25. The Omakau Citizens’ Association is trying to raise enough money to “buy back” the family benefit of a young mother of six, whose husband died recently.
The widow is Mrs Avis Sinclair, whose husband, John, died of cancer at 29, leaving her with children ranging in age from eight years to two weeks.
The secretary of the association (Mr R. G. Holgate) said:—“John lived all his working life in Omakau, and some years ago he capitalised on the family benefit of his
children to finance a new home.
“His death was a cruel blow—especially as Mrs Sinclair was in hospital having her sixth baby when he died.
“It is obvious that his death has left Mrs Sinclair with a heavy financial burden and we decided the best way to help would be to try to pay off the mortgage on her house.” Association members are making a door-to-door collection in Poolburn and Moa Creek in the Ida Valley, and from St. Bathans to Springvale in the Manuherikia Valley.
