Conservation Of Water
Sir,—ln answer to “A.F.F-,” regular measurements of water levels in wells are made by the New Zealand Geological Survey, the Ministry of Works, catchment boards, city, borough and county councils, and numerous private individuals throughout Canterbury and Marlborough. The New Zealand Geological Survey, Christchurch, has on its files information concerning some 2500 wells in Canterbury. Regular water-level measurements are made for some 200 of these wells. Next year, with the start of the International Hydrological Decade, it has been suggested that the research programme into ground water could be intensified. The co-operation of many more observers will be necessary to allow a research programme to function, and the New Zealand Geological Survey, Christchurch, would be glad to hear from people willing to make regular measurements of wells or who may have valuable knowledge or information concerning ground water stored away.—Yours, etc., L. J. BROWN, New Zealand Geological Survey, Christchurch. December 23, 1964.
