CUP CANDIDATES IN GREAT HEART

AUCKLAND, Dec. 23. The Auckland Cup candidates, Arakhan and Baloo, looked in great heart when doing slow work at Ellerslie today. Along with their stablemates Baraboo, Roman Consul, Happy Jan and Galicia they travelled north on Tuesday. . Whereas Arakhan will be having his first try in the big two-mile event Baloo will be attempting the cup for the third time. Last season, carrying 7-8, Baloo finished fifth after not receiving the best of runs. The year before he was unplaced with 8-5. Lately, Baloo has been in excellent form. At his last start, with 8-12, he scored decisively in the Manawatu Cup, 11 furlongs. Two weeks earlier he was third to Ichtar and Blyton over a mile at Riccarton and that had followed on a win in the Canterbury Gold Cup, weight-for-age. Arakhan is no stranger to Ellerslie, having performed
well there over the last season or so. He Is to compete in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on Saturday as a lead up to the Cup on January 1. Baloo is to run in the Christmas Handicap this week-end, and then the Clifford Plate, weight-forage, prior to the Cup. Baraboo, a half-brother to Baloo, is a candidate for the £2500 Newmarket Handicap on Saturday. As yet no rider has been engaged for hitn Galicia is a nice type of three-year-old by Resurgent from the useful race mare Gillino. For her two starts she has been first and third From all accounts she is speedy. She is well favoured at the barrier in the Robinson Handicap with No. 5. Royal Chase and Jan Eyre, members of S. A. Brown's Woodville stable, arrived at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Bandon, which is to contest the Queen Elizabeth Handicap, and Tilly Light have been brought north and are stabled at Takanini.
