WALK-OUT AT U.N.
S. Africa Snubbed (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Dec. 22. African and Communist delegates staged a mass walk-out from the United Nations General Assembly today when the South African Foreign Minister (Mr Hilard Mueller) was called to speak. The walk-out began when Mr Mueller stepped up to the rostrum. Many Asian delegates joined the walk-out but some Asians stayed in their places, as did Western European and Latin American delegates. The demonstration was in protest against South Africa’s racial policies. In his speech, Mr Mueller told the assembly that South Africa was prepared for any attempt by the United Nations to impose sanctions. Mr Mueller delivered a wide-ranging defence of his Government’s racial policies in his 30-minute speech, although 73 delegations were absent at the time.
