Calvados Does Well In Wingatui Trial

"The Press" Special Service

DUNEDIN, December 22. Calvados and Friar’s Birthday, rival candidates for the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday, were two of the most impressive trialists at Wingatui yesterday morning when the semi-final trials for the opening day of the Dunedin Cup meeting were held under ideal conditions.

Rondabelle recorded a smart sprint on the plough, but she is not a certain starter in the Flying Handicap. She has not raced this season and her trainer, R. Heasley, will reserve her if he considers that she is not far enough forward. The track offered splendid going after rain the previous day. The trestles on the course proper were 54 feet out.

Ridden by his race rider, E. J. Didham, Calvados was accompanied by his stablemate, Birthright (B. J. Anderton) over six furlongs in 1:21 3-5, the opening three furlongs in 39sec. Ready For Bold Bid

Calvados has not raced since running fourth to Palisade, Royal Estate and My Contact in the Metropolitan Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Christchurch last month, but he looks ready to make a bold bid on Saturday. The Slug (A. Allan), Samarkand (R. O. Cairns) and Sandy Man (M. S. Parr) ran the first furlong in 13sec and completed five furlongs in 1:6. Over the same ground Kumai (A. Allan) and Melhar (B. J. Anderton) shaded their stable-mate, Allez Vite (M. S. Parr) in 1:7, the first two furlongs in 25sec. Palisade (R. Pledger) and Llanmai (J. R. Dowling) were given easy tasks. The only time the pace was on was over the last two furlongs. Both members of D. P. Wilson's team look well forward to test the milers in the James Hazlett Gold Cup. Galloping Easily Explain <C. S. Jones) was given an easy six furlongs in imin 25sec after taking 28sec for the first two furlongs. High-

land Fair (E. J. Didham) and M>l Roi (M. Landrebe) appeared to be galloping easily at the end of half a mile in 54sec, the first furlong in 13sec. Carron Howe <C. Clydesdale) and Kelven Lad IS. Ryder) worked well over five furlongs, the last half mile in 53sec and the final three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Dusky Belle (L. G. Didham) and Lucky Gem (A. McEwan) ran the last three furlongs in 41sec. Marona (E. J. Didham) and Irish Gloss (L. G. Didham) were together in 39 2-ssec.

Friar's Birthday, ridden by his trainer, A. Powell, appeared to have the edge on Soutaine <B. J. Anderton) and Royal News (J. D. Pankhurst) at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 34 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 53 4-ssec and the final three furlongs in 40 l-ssec. Set The Pace

Royal News set the pace, with the other two gathering him in and the three crossed the line almost on terms.

Rondabelle, with the lightweight rider, P. Silver, in the saddle, dashed over half a mile in 51 2-sscc, the last three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. Chimaera <G. Mclntosh) ran the first furlong in 13sec and completed the distance in 53sec. Mighty Son, ridden by R. O. Cairns, received his jumpers’ certificate. He was accompanied by Corvale (D. A.
